Fear of a Counterfeit Planet - Handmade Resin Figures
For a long time, I had been wanting to make some kind of return to the resin bootleg toy format, the kind of work that was my entry point into the Designer Toy scene back in 2017. Since 2017 the pop culture landscape has changed immensely, and the subversive mash-up culture which we helped to popularize has since become oppressively corporate and mainstream. Now in the wake of properties like Fortnite finding massive success in cross promoting culturally synonymous IPs into a shared world, what we were achieving by combining largely nostalgic legacy properties into our own Frankenstein like creations back at the dawn of the bootleg resin toy art movement can hardly be called counter cultural. Legacy sequels, reboots, and spinoffs, have left so many fatigued by the cultish reverence these corporations have for their own nostalgic histories, turning once beloved cultural touchstones into inauthentic, borderline counterfeit self-parodies. So how does one return to such a medium in 2025? It felt like the only way to authentically examine the future of the artform was to just make a hollow pastiche of my own past work in a similar fashion. So, I present here my own parodic legacy sequel of two of my first characters: Magento, and The Shiftiness. What is new is old again, indeed.
